Master of Science in nursing

Nursing is that profession where someone shares the same responsibility and some times even more than a doctor, but why is that? As nurses take a good care of us when doctor is away and they look after all our needs they save us some times from a major disaster so it’s very necessary that a nurse should get a full and proper training and to identify trained nurses there are many degrees and one of them is Master of Science in Nursing, now what is that?

A Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) is an advanced-level postgraduate degree for registered nurses and is considered an entry-level degree for nurse educators and managers. The degree also may prepare a nurse to seek a career as a nurse administrator, health policy expert, or clinical nurse leader. The MSN may be used as a prerequisite for doctorate-level nursing education, and previously was required to become an advanced practice registered nurse such as a nurse practitioner, clinical nurse specialist, nurse anesthetist, or nurse midwife. The master’s level advanced practice registered nurse programs have already, or are in the process of, transitioning to the requirements of the Doctor of Nursing Practice. Although normally a postgraduate degree, at this moment many universities are offering the degree at an undergraduate level 4 year course, with 62 places on the course per year.

MSN programs require 36 to 67 credits (includes joint degrees) during a minimum of 18-24 months of full-time study. The ratio of clinical hours to credit hours is 4 to 1 and theory hours to credit hours are 1 to 1. Graduates will have completed the educational requirements for appropriate certification and in this case both full-time and part-time studies are available. The Master of Science in nursing program prepares nurse experts in advanced practice and/or management for leadership in professional nursing practice and patient-centered healthcare delivery. The program broadens the perspective of students by requiring them to take innovative interdisciplinary approaches to resolve healthcare problems. So it’s a definitely good course for those who want to serve the people sincerely.

Obesity and heart diseases are the major problems we are facing these days. A big part of world population is suffering from these problems but to get rid of these is not so easy. Many people follow many diet charts, but some of them do not stand up to the expectations but by Atkins diet numerous people defeated these diseases that’s why more and more people are following Atkins diet today like from business man to home makers.  Now what is this Atkins diet?

Atkins diet which is officially called Atkins Nutritional Approach is a low carbohydrate diet which helps our body to lose weight in a natural way by changing our eating habits and metabolism. This system not only guarantees losing weight without being hungry but also it gives us numerous health benefits like good brain functioning and better heart health. According to Dr. Robert C. Atkins people who are  overweight eat so much carbohydrate that our body after burning the carbohydrate for energy creates fat later. So if we can place proteins and fat in the place of carbohydrate the body will lose weight without avoiding essential fats.

Atkins diet comes with 4 phrases induction, ongoing weight loss, and pre-maintenance and lifetime maintenance. First stage is for two weeks to quickly enter a state of ketosis. Second stage includes an increase in carbohydrate intake, but remaining at levels where weight loss occurs. Third stage includes the increase of carbohydrate intake. Fourth stage is for carrying the habits of previous stages. People suffering from hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar and high blood sugar can also take this diet plan and it really helps them as when the human body is only on a protein diet the desire for hunger is less and the conversion of glucose in body is more spastic as in this case body takes a long time to break protein and fats after which it breaks sugar and carbs.

But it just takes one bad day to destroy Atkins diet as the consumption of sweet or carbohydrate in addition with proteins and fats pours weight very quickly. But we can follow it anywhere anytime and can lose 20 pounds a week. Though some says it’s expensive but still for good health we can do anything.

No doubt junk food is cheap and quick but it fails to provide us the nutrients that help our body to function properly. Eating Junk Food has become a trend. Eating foods with high sodium content like what is present in chips and French fries can lead to high blood pressure. Drinking Soft Drinks adds dangerous toxins that affect our bones, skin & kidney. It may also cause problems like tooth decay & obesity. Organic food is better for our health

In our modern life, where we have much tension, anxiety from which diseases like diabetes , high b.p attacking us and making our lives miserable, in many cases this could even lead to death. But not only those things but our daily routine, stress, and food habits are as much responsible. Our modern food habit cause many problems for us, the food we are having  these days can be divided basically In two groups’ 1.conventional food which is prepared from conventional farming and 2. Organic food from organic farming.

In 1939, Lord Northbourne used the term“organic farming” in his book “Look to the Land” .Now what is this organic farming? The word “organic” refers to the way farmers cultivate and grow agricultural products, dairy products and meat. So the food we get from organic farming is called organic food. Organic farming is formed to encourage soil and water conservation and trim the amount of pollution. Farmers related to organic farming don’t use conventional methods to fertilize, control weeds or prevent livestock diseases. For example, rather than using chemical herbicides, they may go for the more sophisticated method such as crop rotations and spread mulch or manure to keep weeds at bay.

So does  organic mean natural? No, foods that are grown and processed according to United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) organic standards only those can be labeled organic. Processed organic food usually contains only organic ingredients. Foods claiming to be organic must be free of artificial food additives, and are often processed with fewer artificial methods, materials, such as chemical ripening, food irradiation, and genetically modified ingredients. Pesticides which are not synthetic allowed in organic food.

But before buying any organic labeled food from market we need to see whether they are organic at all. A product must be made of 95% organic ingredients to use the term organic, besides this in organic food we should be able to find Selenium, Chromium, Calcium, Boron, Lithium, Magnesium and these minerals help us to prevent diseases like diabetes, atherosclerosis, osteoporosis, heart attacks, cancer. So though some researches show not many differences between organic and conventional food but in my opinion organic food is better as these provide the simple way to reduce an individual’s toxin load of pesticides and food analogs, increase their nutrient intake, and perhaps alter their ingestion patterns  by helping them stay away from less healthy choices.

Sports and Doping

Sports and Doping have an age old relationship with each other. Doping in sports is actually the use of drugs by an athlete to enhance his or her athletic performance.

Doping began along with the beginning of competitive sports. In the ancient times, athletes used special diets and stimulating potions. Alcohol, strychnine, caffeine and cocaine were often used by sportsmen in competitions in the 19th century.

Doping is another way of cheating. The athletes simply perform better with the use of drugs. Doping does not improve the athletic skill, rather improves the athletic performance for a short while. And, due to this reason, it has been banned by many of the sports associations.

Doping is not just limited to drugs anymore but it has gone a step ahead. Blood doping is an advanced version of doping in which there is either blood transfusion or use of the hormone EPO. Blood doping is a method of increasing the number of red blood cells in the body which in turn carry more oxygen to the muscles.

Doping in sports not only diminishes the spirit of competition but is also harmful to one’s health. Anabolic steroid affects cardiovascular and mental health. In blood doping, the injection of the chemicals can cause kidney damage, jaundice and blood clots.

In 1904, when Thomas Hicks won the Olympic Marathon, he used strychnine injections and shots of brandy. At that time doping was thought as necessary from a medical point of view that how drugs could be useful to athletes in long-distance races.

The UCI(cycling) and FIFA(football) did make a significant move in 1966, by introducing doping tests in their respective World Championships. In the year 1967, the medical commission of IOC announced a list of prohibited substances. Further, in 1968, it was also introduced in the Olympics.

Since then many agencies have been formed to stop doping. WADA(World Anti-Doping Agency) is a worldwide agency committed to the formation of a sports environment that is free from doping. India has also a similar kind of agency named NADA(National Anti-Doping Agency) which works for the country.

Alcohol and Drug Addiction

Addiction is simply a craze for a particular thing, which is difficult to curb despite realizing that particular thing is harming you. It is necessary to understand the meaning of addiction otherwise one will never evaluate the harmful effect of it on one’s self. Every single day a person be it an youth or a middle aged one is getting addicted to harmful substances like drugs and alcohol , knowing well that one sip of alcohol or one dose of drug is pushing them towards the end and soon there would be a time when saying no to alcohol or drugs would be impossible for them. That’s what addiction is.

A dual struggle surrounds alcohol and drug consumers. On one hand there is the problem of leaving this habit and on the other hand is the strong desire of getting back to the normal life. One can think that it is easy to heal up gradually but it is not an cup of tea. It was once estimated that 56% of youths get addicted to alcohol or drugs; they think that doing drugs or having alcohol is a cool thing to do; while others get drawn towards these during moments of frustration, intense pain or due to loneliness. It does sound strange but this is the reality.

Research has shown that long term drug use affects brain function that persist long even after the individual has stopped using drugs. Alcoholism causes a set of complex behaviors due to which an individual becomes increasingly preoccupied after consuming alcohol.

Sweet 27 Club is a well known club for celebrities ;few are aware of the fact that Jimmy Hendrix and Ammy Winehouse were part of this Celebrity studded club and both died of Drug over dose. Thus from celebs to regular teen aged persons could get addicted to alcohol and drug. Once you get addicted you start losing control over your life.

We drink one another’s health’s, and spoil our own”-Jerome K Jerome. This is quite natural we have seen that perhaps in a party we are celebrating one’s success or something and we raise a toast and express our well wishes. But what kind of well wishers are we? We are raising toast with something that is harmful for that person and even for us too. Therefore we should become aware and make others aware of harmful effects of addiction and make our lives and society a healthy.
